Daryl Kavanagh has rejoined former club St Patrick’s Athletic from Cork City, bringing to four the number of players who have left Turner’s Cross in recent days, following the departures of Denis Behan, Adam Rundle and, on loan to Waterford United, Danny Furlong.

Kavanagh’s registration was yesterday being processed in a bid to be available for selection for league leaders’ Pats’ home game against Drogheda United at Richmond Park tonight.

Meanwhile, travelling in the opposite direction is goalkeeper David Ryan, who has signed for Cork City from Pats, having previously spent several seasons at Limerick.

Confirming striker Kavanagh had left Cork after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent, manager Tommy Dunne said: “Obviously, things are tight from a budget point of view, so we have made a couple of changes over the past couple of days.

We brought Ciarán (Kilduff) in at the start of the window and he has done extremely well for us. Danny Morrissey had been playing well until his hamstring injury, and he is also back to full fitness now. We also have Stephen Kenny and Rob Lehane, who have been doing well in training, so we do have options up front.”

Nevertheless, Dunne went on to say he is looking to add another attacking option to the squad, commenting: “I have spoken to a couple of strikers in the last 24 hours. We might have one or two coming in to play in the West Brom game (on Tuesday), but we will have to wait and see how that develops. We will keep working on it as we need to try and get another forward player in if we can.”

But first up for City is another Munster derby at Thomond Park tonight, as they take on a Limerick side who are one place and two points above them in the table.

Colin Healy (knee), John Dunleavy (knee) and Stephen Kenny (hamstring) are all doubts for Cork, while John Kavanagh, Darren Dennehy, Kevin Burns, and Kevin Murray are definitely out. Kalen Spillane will also miss out, as he begins a three-match suspension following his sending off against St Pat’s last week.

For the home side, Stephen Folan is available again after suspension, but Stephen McGann and Pat Purcell are still injured while there is a doubt over Shane Tracy. Limerick manager Stuart Taylor said: “Cork are a good side, but after the last two results, I don’t want a draw, I want a win and we want to do it in a bit of style, in front of our home supporters.”

While St Pats will be looking to maintain their three-point lead at the top of the Airtricity Premier Division against Drogheda, there are big games among the chasing pack tonight, with second-placed Dundalk at home to Shamrock Rovers and third meeting fourth in a north-west derby as Derry City host Sligo Rovers.

And down at the bottom, Bohemians welcome UCD to Dalymount Park.

Meanwhile, in the First Division, Waterford United will be looking to make the most of the club’s reprieve when they visit Salthill Devon, while Athlone Town are at home to Finn Harps and, with an 8pm kick off, Wexford Youths host Longford Town.
