Byrne Eager To Grasp Setanta Sports Cup

Stuart Byrne will captain St. Patrick's Athletic at Tallaght Stadium in the Setanta Sports Cup final tomorrow - and the midfielder wants to end the day with a winners medal.

With Damien Lynch set to miss the match through injury, Byrne will take the captain's armband at Tallaght Stadium as the Saints face Bohemians in the Setanta Sports Cup final (kick-off 6.30pm).

The 33-year-old goes into the match knowing that he might not get another chance to lift silverware in his career and he wants to make the most of that opportunity tomorrow.

"I would love to keep on playing for another few years, and maybe I will," said Byrne. "But I mightn't get to another cup final, so I have to enjoy it while it's there. I'm going to grasp it with both hands."

A winner of the tournament with Drogheda United in 2007, Byrne has also experienced Setanta Sports Cup heartache when he was part of the Shelbourne team defeated by Linfield in 2005.

However, the Dubliner says that he is determined not to repeat the failures of Shelbourne.

"That Linfield game with Shels, we were so concentrated on everything else - the league, European football, because we thought we could make a break-through, so the Setanta Cup final was a bit of a second thought," he said.

"As it turned out, it was a huge occasion on the day and there was a huge crowd there, but we didn't turn up.

We only have ourselves to blame. So certainly in the past I wouldn't have put so much emphasis on the game as I am this week. I'm really looking forward to it."
