Match Preview Saints Vs Waterford (23/05/25)

St Patrick's Athletic will continue a busy month of May by hosting Waterford FC at Richmond Park.

THE MATCH

  • Just Camac and Shed End Terrace tickets remain for Friday night's match.
  • The game will also be live on Virgin Media 2 and the Virgin Media Player.
  • St Pat's will be looking to continue their excellent home form against a Blues side in good form recently.

    SAINTS SCENE
  • The Saints come into Friday evening in 5th place in the table, two points behind Derry City in 2nd and Bohemians in 3rd.
  • A win against Waterford could move St Pat's back up to 2nd spot.
  • Their last home match last Friday saw Jamie Lennon's 95th minute winner claim the three points in dramatic fashion against Cork City. Mason Melia and Zack Elbouzedi were also on target as Pat's came from 2-1 down in the 90th minute to win 3-2.

    LAST TIME OUT
  • The Saints were beaten 4-0 at Shamrock Rovers on Monday evening and will be looking to bounce back tomorrow night in front of their home support.

    MOST RECENT MEETING:
  • 28/03/25 - Brandon Kavanagh's 90th minute cracker from a free kick saw his side mount a brilliant comeback to take the points home from the RSC after a 2-1 victory.

    STAT ATTACK:
  • That win against Cork City last Friday made it 21 home matches unbeaten for St Pat's, 15 of those have been in the league. Their last defeat at Richmond Park came against Dundalk last June.
  • The Saints and The Blues will be meeting for the 128th time in the League of Ireland. The record reads 55 Pat's wins, 48 Waterford victories and 24 draws.
  • The last meeting of these teams in Inchicore saw St Pat's win 3-0 last September, with Zack Elbouzedi, Mason Melia and Aidan Keena on target.

    MAGIC MOMENT:
  • That Brandon Kavanagh winner earlier this season, which was voted as the St Patrick's Athletic / McCarthy Insurance Group Goal of the Month for March is a Magic Moment that sent the away end wild.

    OPPOSITION WATCH:
  • Waterford FC are 7th in the table, four points behind St Patrick's Athletic.
  • They've been in excellent form recently, with four wins in their last five matches, including victories in Dublin against Shelbourne and Bohemians.
  • They were beaten 3-1 at home to Shamrock Rovers last Friday.
  • New Manager John Coleman will be taking charge of his third match as Waterford boss tomorrow.
  • Former Saints Ryan Burke, Ben McCormack and Tommy Lonergan could face their former side.

    FROM THE DUG OUT:
  • Manager Stephen Kenny said: "It's a 6th game in a busy month of May so far so we're getting ready and looking forward to Waterford coming to Inchicore.

We let ourselves down on Monday (at Shamrock Rovers) losing in the manner that we did, that's the first time that has happened to us to lose in that way, convincingly in the end so we've got the respond in the right way.

The seesaw nature of the League and the way it is, two weeks ago we were top of the table after beating Galway, and scored two excellent late goals to beat Cork last Friday. We've had a couple of defeats and we've got to bounce back from Monday and try to get the victory against Waterford.

Waterford have beaten Shelbourne, Bohemians, Derry and Galway recently, they are obviously in good form. From our point of view, even allowing for the disappointment of losing on Monday, if we win tomorrow we probably go second or third in the League so that's where we are.

The halfway point is next week against Sligo so we want a strong finish. Waterford are obviously in great form, but if we can win this game, it puts us a strong position, considering so many things have gone wrong for us this season, we've lost Romal Palmer this week for a further extended period which is a disappointment because he is such a brilliant individual and a terrific player and an important member of the squad so a lot of injury issues.

The players have still scored a lot of goals, we're still the second top scorers in the division so we want to try to keep that home form going, we're unbeaten at Richmond since last June which is a considerable amount of time so we want to continue in that vein and try to get that victory."

    PLAYER VIEW:
Joe Redmond: "Monday at Shamrock Rovers was a tough night for us, we weren't good enough and it was difficult for us, we've reviewed it and we have to deal with it and learn from it and what went wrong, take it on the chin and hold our hands up and take responsibility.

Obviously there is a disappointment when you lose like that, but we've got to get the mood back up really quickly, we're confident that we are a good team and a good squad.

We have to try to move on from it quickly as the games come so quickly in the League. If we let it dwell it would impact us on Friday

Tomorrow we've got another home game which we're all buzzing for because we want to put that game in Tallaght behind us a quickly as possible and we have to shown a reaction to that. We look back to three weeks ago and we were top so we've got to try to put a little run together and if we can get a few wins we can be right back up there and that has to start tomorrow."

    TEAM NEWS:
  • Romal Palmer (hamstring) has had a setback in his comeback after his operation and will face a further period of time out of action. Chris Forrester (groin) is pushing to get back soon as is Kian Leavy (ankle) after a knock against Cork City. Jamie Lennon is suspended after picking up his 5th yellow card on Monday night.

    TICKETS AND TV:
  • Just Camac and Shed End Terrace tickets remain for Friday night's match.
  • The game will be live on Virgin Media 2 and Virgin Media Player in Ireland, and on LOITV outside Ireland.
