Jimmy (Jamsie) Redmond RIP
All at St Patrick's Athletic are saddened to hear of the passing of Jimmy (Jamsie) Redmond, who won an FAI Cup medal in 1961 while at the Saints, and took part in our inaugural European adventure.
Jimmy was a talented forward who came through the ranks at Stella Maris and Leinster Senior League side Aer Lingus, and made his name in the League of Ireland with a great Cork Hibernians team.
An illness put him out of the game for a year before his return to LOI football with St Pat's. He made his debut against his old club at Richmond Park on February 26th, 1961.
Within weeks he was part of that famous FAI Cup-winning side, helping Pat's get there with a vital goal in the quarter-final against Shelbourne and leading the line in the final versus Drumcondra.
He was unlucky not to score in the decider, hitting the crossbar with a header, and having a goal ruled out for a marginal offside late on, but played a key role 'leading the line' in the unexpected victory for St Pat's.
Jimmy continued with the club into the 1961/62 season and played in both legs of the European Cup Winners' Cup tie against Jock Stein's Dunfermline Athletic, which marked the European debut for St Patrick's Athletic.
In total, he scored 8 goals for St Pat's (1 League, 1 FAI Cup, 3 LOI Shield, 1 Dublin City Cup, 2 North-South Cup) between March and September 1961.
Jimmy later played with Dundalk, where he won a League of Ireland title, and Sligo Rovers, as well as LSL sides Workman's Club and Drogheda. He passed away on April 7th at the age of 87.
