Axel Sjoberg Signs New Contract

St Patrick's Athletic are delighted to confirm that defender Axel Sjoberg has signed a new contract with the club.

Axel (23) joined The Saints on in March 2023 and made his debut off the bench on March 31st, in a 3-0 win at home to UCD AFC, replacing Sam Curtis in the 82nd minute at Richmond Park.

Sjoberg's time at St Pat's so far has been hampered by injuries, the Swede made six appearances before a hamstring injury forced him to miss 16 games.

He returned and played 45 minutes for our U19s in the 1-0 defeat to UCD AFC U19s on September 17th, and make his first team return against Dundalk on September 22nd, but unfortunately hurt his hamstring again after just 22 minutes.

He underwent surgery and missed the remainder of the 2023 season, as Pat's went on to win the Sports Direct FAI Cup and secure a 3rd placed LOI Premier Division finish.

Sjoberg is delighted to have signed a new contract:

"I'm really happy to have signed a new deal at St Pat's.

Despite my injuries, I've had a really enjoyable time at the club so far.

Last season was amazing, we had a great year and a big win in the Cup Final.

I would like that thank everyone for all of their help and support so far, both on the pitch and off the pitch, in terms of my recovery and treatment and also how everyone helped me settle into the club and into living in Dublin.

I'm working really hard on my recovery and I hope to see you all back at Richmond Park next season, C'mon The Saints!"

Manager Jon Daly added:

"I'm very happy to have Axel back on board.

He showed a lot of promise in the games when he was fit, he has been unfortunate with injuries, limiting him to only seven appearances so far but he did well in training and in the matches he played in.

He's been working hard with the Medical and Fitness Team since his operation, at 23 he is a good age now to kick-on and progress.

He's a great character and we're looking forward to seeing Axel back fully fit in 2024."

Axel spent seven years in the Helsingborgs Academy, before joining Swedish 2nd Division side IK Freg, making 26 appearances.

The right-back signed for Hammarby IF in August 2020 and won the Swedish FA Cup during the 2020-2021 campaign, it was a 5-4 penalty shootout win after a 0-0 draw against BK Hacken.

Axel spent the 2022 season with BK Olympic, making 25 appearances before joining The Saints in March of this year.

Axel's twin brother Filip is also a professional footballer, he plays for IK Brage in the Swedish 1st Division.
