Do You Know The Way To Richmond Park (Part II)

Song inspiration?

I just went at it intuitively. I made a list of elements I wished to include, both musically and lyrically. The song itself is titled after the "Do You Know The Way To Richmond Park" campaign, aimed at building awareness of the existence of such a great club and source of enjoyment on our doorstep in Dublin.

The song kicks off with an audio sample of Paddy Eccles, an iconic Pats fan, singing after we won the league in 2013 and concludes with sound bites from the FAI Cup final 2014. These snippets are a kind of ode to the past and present.

What about the lyrics and style?

The song is meant to be jovial and aimed towards people who are not aware of the club, so I mention simple aspects like the location of the club, Red and White Army, Liam Buckley, the Shed-End Invincibles, Friday nights etc.

In terms of musical style I utilise a Stone Roses-esque drum loop, which provides the rhythmic drive, and during the solo section I include an arrangement of "Oh When The Saints Go Marching In", which is truly synonymous with the club.

Can anyone download it for free?

I haven't put it up for sale and won't be looking to gain financially from this project. I was happy to act as a volunteer and offer my musical services over to the club.

If it can be used to help club fundraising in some way, I'll have no issue with that. I'm just hoping the song helps to build some awareness of the club with new fans and keeps the old fans happy!

What about your own career?

I'm also hoping this will encourage Saints fans to check out my music. I'm a full time performer and song writer who gigs throughout the country. People can check out my material at: gregcliffordmusic.com.

If anyone wishes to book me for gigs or even acquire a free mp3 of "Do You Know The Way To Richmond Park?" they can email me at gregcliffordmusic@gmail.com.

What's your own gig schedule?

I've had a busy schedule of late, which in ways started back in July of last year. I lived in Berlin from July to December focusing solely on writing new material.

It was fantastic escapism there and was highly conducive to creating a new direction in sound. Since the turn of the new year I've assembled a 6 piece backing band, recorded a new 3 track EP, shot a new music video and gigged the new material.

What's next for you musically?

The next plan of action is to launch my new single, which will be released around July/August this year. That will include radio and hopefully TV appearances, the launching of a new website, as well as an Irish release tour. Keep an eye on my facebook and twitter for updates and gig bookings.

Editor: A huge thanks to Greg for taking the time to speak with us and of course creating a wonderful new piece of Saints history with his new song "Do You Know The Way To Richmond Park?".
