St Pats Lose Narrowly To Dynamo Kiev

Despite an outstanding display, St Patrick's Athletic were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Dynamo Kiev in their pres-season friendly match in Marbella this afternoon.

Played in a high tempo, the new look St Pats team acquitted themselves well in the warm conditions.

While Kiev enjoyed a lot of possession Keith Fahey and Gary Dempsey were outstanding in their use of the ball in midfield and controlled the game for periods of the match.

The first clear cut goal chance fell to Gary Dempsey after 23 minutes following some good set up play by Mark Quigley but his shot was well saved by the Kiev keeper. There were one or two lucky escapes at the Pat's end with one shot coming off the inside of the post before being cleared by defender Jamie Harris.

St Pat's were unlucky not to take the lead shortly after that when on-trial Bas Savage had excellent opportunity which was again well saved by the keeper.

Gary Dempsey headed just over in 34th minute after good approach play involving the classy Joe O'Cearuil, Keith Fahey and Ryan Guy.

At halftime the sides went in level and at half time and after the break Brendan Clarke replaced Barry Ryan in goal.

The second half followed a similar pattern with the Pat's defence having to be ever vigilant against the lightning speed of Kiev attack. Kiev took the lead 12mins into the half when 20 year old Kpadez scored with a tremendous drive from the edge of the penalty box.

Dempsey was almost on target shortly afterwards following another pinpoint delivery from Ryan Guy.

Brendan Clarke again had to make an excellent save after 69mins to prevent Kpadez adding to his tally.

Substitute Gary O'Neill shot narrowly wide in 77th minute after an incisive right wing cross from the impressive Guy.

Despite some near misses, the Saints failed to force an equaliser their display deserved.

St Pats team: Barry Ryan, Damien Lynch, Joe O'Cearuill, Stephen Paisley, Bobby Ryan, Keith Fahey, Garry Dempsey, Ryan Guy, Bashir Savage, Mark Quigley. Subs Brendan Clarke for Barry Ryan (45 mins), Gary O'Neill for Bas Savage (60 mins), Alan Kirby for Bobby Ryan (62mins), Noel Haverty for Damien Lynch

The team returns tomorrow to prepare for Friday nights' game against Shelbourne at Richmond Park. It is expected that most of the players who missed today's game will be fully fit and available to play.

A busy week for the Saints concludes on Saturday when a community day at the club allows supporters the chance to meet the new players and to enjoy some family fun at the same time.

The community day takes place between 11.00am and 2.00pm on Saturday 23rd Feb at Richmond Park.
