Shay Gibbons

    • Position: Forward
    • Number: TBC
    • Age: 95 (19th May, 1929)

Shay joined St Pats in 1950 from Whitehall Rangers while we were playing in the Leinster Senior League.

He made an immediate impact in our first season as members of the League of Ireland, 1951-52. There were 12 teams in the League and each club played each other twice. Shay scored 26 goals in 22 games, including four hat-tricks.

His scoring was so prolific, he was honoured with the first of his four full International caps against Germany in Cologne in May 1952.

Shay was also a Youth International and represented the League of Ireland many times in the prestigious series of Inter-League games of that era.

Shay continued his amazing scoring record in the following seasons. In 1952-53 he was again the League's topscorer with 22 goals (an average of a goal for every League game) including five and one disallowed in a 6-2 win against Cork Celtic.

In 1954-55 and 1955-56 he was the League's top scorer and St Pat's won the League in both seasons. Shay went on to score 120 goals in his League of Ireland career.

He left St Pat's a few months before the end of 1957-58 to play with Holyhead Town in North Wales.

Shay retired from the game in 1959 at the young age of thirty and his achievements are all the more remarkable for the fact that he chose to spend only nine years at in the League.
