Formerly with Belvedere Boys, Home Farm and Shamrock Rovers, John was one of Brian Kerr's first signings when he joined St Pat's from Drogheda United at the start of of the 1987-88 season.

He was a central figure in "The Saints" unexpected surge to Championship contenders in that season,(finishing 2nd.), and was well established as one of the League's outstanding defenders in the League winning side of 1990.

With the exception of one season, (1991-92), when he re-joined Shamrock Rovers, and more recently as Manager of Dublin City and Assistant Manager at Shelbourne, John's career is, first and foremost, associated with 'The Saints'.

He captained the side which won the League and finished runner-up in the F.A.I. Cup in 1996.

Was club Manager from May 2004 until end of the 2008 season and built a team which achieved F.A.I. Cup runner-up in 2006, League Runner-up in 2007 and 2008 as well as an unprecedented third qualifying place in the U.E.F.A. Cup 2008.

Represented the League of Ireland on a number of occasions.
