Rene joined the Saints in July 2013 having been released by Plymouth Argyle.

The 6ft 5in Dubliner made his début for the club in our EA Sports Cup quarter-final against Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght Stadium - a night which saw the Hoops come out on top on a 3-1 scoreline after extra-time.

Rene made further appearances for the Saints in 2013 in our Leinster Senior Cup run to the final which ended with the Hoops again gaining the upper hand.

Rene's career began at St. Joseph's Boys, before he earned a move to Walsall where he made his first team début aged just 18. At the same time, the keeper was starring for the Republic of Ireland as he earned caps at both U19 and U21 level.

Rene's Walsall spell saw him loaned out for spells at Worcester City and Hednesford Town, but despite having the offer of a contract on the table and making 35 first team appearances over his time at the Saddlers, he joined Watford in 2010.

Gilmartin's time at Vicarage Road saw him feature little, and once more he was sent out to both Yeovil and Crawley Town to gain first team experience. Watford released Rene in 2012, where he was shortly snapped up afterwards by Plymouth.

Rene made 16 appearances for the club in all competitions in the 2012/13 season, however after manager John Sheridan placed him on the transfer list, he left the club by mutual consent.

Rene holds the distinction of being a Uefa B License holder having gained the qualification in April 2008.
