UCD 6 - St Patrick's Athletic 0Facing a much more experienced team the Saints Under 21s were given an example of the level that they need to reach and surpass. It was always going to be difficult for the Saints who had just one substitute available due to holidays and injuries. UCD started the brighter of the two sides and were rewarded with a penalty on 13 minutes when Darrell Moore upended the UCD striker in the box. Ex-Saint Ciaran Quinn stepped up to rifle the ball past Gavin McInerney. UCD continued to apply pressure on the Saints defence but it took until 32 minutes before they scored their second, the simplest of tap-ins following good work down the right-wing. Two minutes before half-time UCD increased their advantage still further when hesitation in the Saints defence again allowed UCD players too much space. Saints stepped up their game in the second half and started to pass the ball around but found the strong, tall UCD defensive line too difficult to break down. On 72 minutes a UCD break saw Darrell Moore connect with a low cross only to see the ball fly past Gavin McInerney and into the net. By this stage Saints relative inexperience was showing and only four minutes later UCD made it 5-0. With just four minutes remaining Colm Foley got his name on the scoresheet by deftly side-footing home a low cross from the right. Unfortunately for the Saints it happened at the wrong end of the pitch. In the last minute, Saints midfielder Brian Rooney saw his free kick from 30 yards out touched over the crossbar by the UCD keeper.
