St Patrick’s Athletic attempted to lure former Republic of Ireland international defender Jeff Kenna to the club, manager John McDonnell has revealed.
Kenna was released by Derby County at the end of last season, and has been training with League One side Cheltenham Town in recent weeks.
McDonnell met 35-year-old in recent weeks in a bid to bring him to Inchicore on a short-term deal but no agreement could be reached with the former Birmingham City captain, who won the last of his 27 senior caps in a Euro 2000 play-off against Turkey seven years ago.
The Saints boss told the Irish Sun: “I spent the whole afternoon talking to him and I would have liked to have signed him and we were close enough [to an agreement].
“It would have involved him coming over from England for games but, in the end, we couldn’t come to an agreement and that was the end of that.”
