2012 Setanta Sports Cup Launched

REPRESENTATIVES of the 12 participants in the 2012 Setanta Sports Cup attended today’s launch and draw for the First Round of the competition at Aviva Stadium.

The draw was carried out by Glenavon player-manager Gary Hamilton and ex-St Patrick’s Athletic midfielder Stuart Byrne at a ceremony hosted by Felix Healy.

The unseeded clubs in this year’s competition are: Cliftonville, Glentoran, Lisburn Distillery and Portadown from the Carling Irish Premiership and Bohemian FC, Bray Wanderers, Derry City and St Patrick’s Athletic from the Airtricity League.

The First Round draw paired Bray Wanderers v Glentoran; Bohemians v Portadown; Lisburn Distillery v Derry City; Cliftonville v St Patrick's Athletic.

The four winners to emerge from the first round will join the four seeded clubs, last year’s winners Shamrock Rovers, Crusaders, Linfield and Sligo Rovers as well as in the quarter final draw, which will take place on February 20.

First Round First Legs to be played February 13, second legs to be played February 20.

The four seeded clubs shall be drawn against the winning clubs from round 1 and will compete in home and away matches as above. 1st leg ties will be played on March 5 and 2nd leg ties on 20 March 2012. The draw will take place on Monday February 20.

The prize fund will remain the same as last year with €50,000 for the winners, €30,000 for the runners up, €15,000 for each of the defeated semi-finalists, €10,000 for each of the defeated quarter finalists and €7,500 for clubs defeated in round one. A workshop for all participating clubs will take place in the Canal Court in Newry on February 1, 2012. Additional performance bonuses will be paid for winning (€2,000) or drawing (€1,000) a match during the competition with the exception of the final.
