Satisfactory Start For Mahon

Pete Mahon's first task on the day he was appointed the new St Patrick's Athletic manager was to oversee tonight's 1-1 Setanta Cup draw at Derry City.

And the former Bohemians and UCD boss will have been heartened with the fighting spirit his side displayed, coming from a goal down to earn a share of the spoils.

The visitors were outplayed in the opening 45 minutes and Derry's side deservedly hit the front on the stroke of half-time when Tommy Stewart drove the ball home from the penalty spot.

But in the 56th minute John Lester, at fault for Derry's penalty, atoned for his first half error when he netted a wonder strike.

Having received the ball 35 yards from goal, the midfielder let fly, the ball dipping over the head of Derry keeper, Ger Doherty, who had strayed from his goal-line.
