McDonnell: We Lacked Sharpness

St Patrick's Athletic boss John McDonnell believes that his team were missing that bit of match sharpness during their 1-1 draw with Bray Wanderers.

The Super Saints were presented with a chance to reclaim top spot in the eircom Premier Division due to Bohemians not playing until Tuesday, but they were held at home to 10-man Bray.

Mark Quigley was needed to rescue a point for the Inchicore outfit after Paul Dunphy had given the visitors the lead, and McDonnell admits that if his team had not been affected by the break then it could have been a totally different scoreline by the end.

"I think coming in from the break, this is what happens. No matter how much you prepare that little bit of match sharpness goes," McDonnell told RTE's Monday Night Soccer.

"Sometimes you are better off losing a match and winning the next one, rather than getting two draws. We need to keep in touch and stay up there.

"In fairness to the group that we have they should be good enough to go and win the match. We were down a few injuries, but we can't use that as an excuse. We definitely had the chances and should have had the game wrapped up.

"The team that gets the first goal is always going to be difficult to break down. Eddie [Gormley] has done a great job there, they are picking up points and they are going along nicely.

"You're not going to turn it on straight after the break and we knew that. We played some nice stuff in the second-half, but just gave away a silly goal."
