The FAI's Technical Department this week ran the second module of their UEFA Pro-Licence course in Malahide, County Dublin. This is the first ever running of a level four coaching course in Ireland and most of the nineteen participants are involved in Irish football management.
The full spectrum of UEFA coaching levels are now available in Ireland and will become increasingly important with club licensing set to soon require that each club's head coach or manager hold the UEFA Pro Licence.
Lectures on the course were held in the Grand Hotel in Malahide while the practicals took place at Malahide United's ground Gannon Park - the same place Ireland's senior international side train.
The June module covered areas such as managing professional players, motivation, technical know-how, tactical theory, scouting and technical analysis.
Lectures and demonstrations were given by some of the top coaches and
managers in football including former Lyon and Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier, Everton manager David Moyes, Chelsea Sporting Director Frank Arnesen, Crewe Alexandra Technical Director Dario Gradi, Manchester United's Technical Skills Development Coach Rene Meulensteen and Fulham assistant manager Les Reed.
FAI Technical Director Packie Bonner said he was delighted at how the course is progressing.
"The Pro Licence course will equip all involved with the capacity to drive the development of the professional game in Ireland to greater heights. This is about opening people's minds to best practice and the latest innovations and the reaction from those on the course has been first class," said Bonner.
The third module of the course will take place later this year and will involve visits to overseas clubs.
Those participating in the course are:
Paul Ashford (Skonta Riga FC, Latvia), Packie Bonner (FAI Technical Director), Joe Boyle (Ireland under-17 coach), Paul Clement (Ireland under-21 assistant manager), Tony Cousins (Galway United), Pat Dolan (Wexford Youths), Paul Doolin (Drogheda United), Pat Fenlon, John Gill (Dundalk), Don Givens (Ireland under-21 manager), Mike Kerley, Brian Kerr (St Patrick's Athletic), Noel King (Ireland Senior Women's Team Manager), Pete Mahon (UCD), Tony Mannion, Alan Mathews (Longford Town), John McDonnell (St Patrick's Athletic), Noel O'Reilly (FAI Head Coach), Damien Richardson (Cork City).
