Ex-Supersaint Philip Hughes came back to haunt his old club, grabbing two goals in the opening tie of this year's eircom sponsored League Cup.
Hughes' brace and Cathal O'Connor's strike may be enough to see the holders out of the competition at the group stages. St Pat's must now defeat Shelbourne next Tuesday and hope for a favourable outcome when Dublin City host Shelbourne later in the month.
It was O'Connor's 75th minute equaliser that cancelled out Jimmi-Lee Jones' 16th minute opener - the ex-Wolves striker finishing under Brendan Kennedy from a through ball by Chris Kerins.
It was an even contest for the majority of the game. Kennedy in the visitors goal was busy keeping out Keith Dunne and Colm Foley, while Brendan Clarke saved well from Robbie Collins.
But it was Hughes who proved to be the match winner, scoring on the 80th and 88th minute to give City high hopes of advancing to the next stage.
