A DAMP and dull Richmond Park last night witnessed last seasons Cup finalists progress to the third round of the FAI Ford Cup last with relative ease.
A bright start from Leinster Senior League outfit Phoenix FC, who were making their first appearance in the competition, was shortlived when Pats broke the deadlock on 15 minutes.
Top marksman, Mark Quigley tapped in from close range following some good work by Keith Fahey and Michael Foley on the edge of the box. It was the strikers 11th goal in all competitions fot the season.
After the opening goal, Phoenix began chasing the game as John McDonnell's side moved up through the gears. Gary O' Neil, Alan Kirby, Keith Fahey and Mark Quigley all squandered decent opportunities to double Pat's lead.
Phoenix keeper' Vladimir Munteanu, once of Monaghan United, was one player who was enjoying the occasion, as he made a string of saves to keep his side in the game.
The expected second goal finally came after 71 minutes, centre-half Darragh Maguire steering the ball home.
And in the closing stages Alan Kirby made the game safe before substitute Kevin Cornwall made it four nil on 89 minutes sending the league leaders into the next round.
