TOWN SIGNS JAKE CARROLL

Huddersfield Town has today completed the signing of Jake Carroll from top League of Ireland side St Patrick's Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

The 21 year-old, who operates mainly at left back but also has experience in central midfield, has previously spent two separate spells on trial with the Terriers and will now join up with the Club permanently at the conclusion of the current season to prepare for the 2013/14 campaign.

London-born Carroll grew up in Lucan, Ireland and played the majority of his youth football for Home Farm but had a short spell at Belvedere before joining St Pats' Under-20 side in 2010. During this time he was capped by Republic of Ireland's schools side whilst at university.

Since breaking into the First Team he has made over 50 appearances for the Club, which includes Europa League appearances in Ukraine, Iceland and Germany.

Carroll was the first player to be a part of a pioneering scholarship programme between St Patrick's Athletic and the National University of Ireland in Maynooth and the move coincides with the completion of his degree in Business.

Following its success, the scholarship has now been extended to 4 recipients per year.

Commenting on the signing, Chairman of St Patrick's Athletic Garrett Kelleher said “I am particularly pleased that Jake could complete his third level education and now embark on his football career with a degree which we hope will serve him well in future years. We wish him the very best of luck at Huddersfield Town.”

The six footer spent seven days training with Town in February before returning for a second spell during the First Team squad's three day training stint at the FA National Football Centre, St. George's Park, in March.

Huddersfield Town Manager Mark Robins commented on Jake:

“Jake impressed me a lot when he was here a few weeks ago on trial. He is left sided, quick, powerful and has a good attitude with an aptitude to learn quickly.

“He will have to adapt to the style of football in England, but he arrives with the challenge of breaking into our First Team.

“Ireland is an interesting market for English clubs. A lot of talented Irish players arrive in England at 16 years old, in the same way that we recently recruited the country's Under-16 Captain Danny Kane from Cherry Orchard, whereas others are identified after emerging in a League of Ireland team at aged 20 or 21, such as James McClean and Seamus Coleman. Jake comes under the latter of those two routes.”
