St Pat's Can Win A Trophy This Year

Setanta.com blogger Alan Cawley reckons St Patrick's Athletic have a squad capable of winning some silverware this season.

Every team in the league has strengthened this year and I think the title race will be a lot closer than it was when Bohemians ran away with it. There are a few teams that should be up there and I expect St Pat's to be one of them.

I'm one of the new arrivals at the club and hopefully I can contribute to the team. Although there is strength in every position and Jeff [Kenna, manager] has done well to build a strong squad.

Along with myself, there are players like Gary Rogers, John Lester, Mark Leech, and Darragh Ryan, who all know what it takes to compete in this league. Then there is someone like Gints Friemanis - we just call him Jimmy - who is an unknown, but someone that looks very exciting.

The club lost a great player in Keith Fahey this year, but sometimes players like that just have to move on and test themselves at a higher level. We feel that we have guys that can come in and do a job in midfield.

When I spoke to Jeff about signing for the club, he said that he wanted to win a trophy in his first year here. That is exactly what I wanted to hear as this is a big club and it should be challenging for silverware each season.

Obviously there are a few new players coming in, but the core is still very strong with guys like Jamie Harris, Jason Gavin, Gary Dempsey, and Damian Lynch. These guys know what it takes to win.

It will be a tough season and we can't afford too many slip-up's, but I feel we have the right attitude, the right manager, and the right balance in our squad to win something this year.
